Recognising and Responding to Eating Difficulties in Neurodivergent Learners

Eating difficulties in neurodivergent children go far beyond “fussy eating.” From sensory selectivity and ARFID to PICA and anxiety-driven restriction, the picture is often complex and easily missed. This practical session helps staff understand what they’re seeing, know when to worry, and respond in ways that actually help.

Learning outcomes:

  • Understand the range of eating difficulties common in neurodivergent learners
  • Recognise eating behaviour as communication, not defiance
  • Know when to refer and when school-based support is enough
  • Apply practical strategies that reduce pressure and increase safety
