Understanding masking and reducing the pressure on the children who do it
A child holds it together all day at school. Teachers see someone who copes. At home, the same child falls apart: meltdowns, tears, shutdown, rage. The adults who see these two very different children can end up talking past each other, when they could be working together.
Masking is how many autistic and ADHD children make themselves look fine in places that don’t feel safe, and it costs them dearly. The child who holds it all together at school often has nothing left by home time. This recorded CPD session gets underneath what masking is, why it builds, and how to take the pressure off at school and at home, so whether you’re the adult at home or the adult in the classroom, you’re better able to support the same child.
