Session Overview
Fair is Not Equal: Supporting Every Student to Succeed
Fairness in schools doesn’t mean treating every student the same. It means making sure each one gets what they need to succeed. This session explores what equity looks like in practice, why struggling students aren’t failing students, and how small, deliberate changes can shift outcomes for the children who need most. It’s a session for educators who hold high expectations of every student and want to know how to help all of them reach the bar.
Learning outcomes:
By the end of this session, you will be able to:
- Understand the difference between equality, equity, and belonging, and why it matters for the students who struggle most
- Read struggling behaviour as a signal for support rather than a sign of failure
- Hold high expectations alongside meaningful support, without lowering the bar
- Identify small, sustainable changes you can make tomorrow that build success over time
- Recognise common patterns in disengaged or hard-to-reach students and respond to the need underneath the behaviour
