Session Overview

Behaviour as Communication: Understanding and Responding to Unmet Needs

When a student kicks off, it’s easy to take it personally. But what looks like defiance is almost always a nervous system in survival mode, doing whatever it takes to feel safe. This fast-paced keynote shows why challenging behaviour is communication, not sabotage, and gives you practical tools to respond well in those first moments. You’ll learn to read what behaviour is telling you, stay regulated when they’re not, and use the CALM framework to get the first 60 seconds right.

  • Understand why behaviour is survival, not sabotage, and why logic doesn’t work when the thinking brain is offline
  • Recognise the four survival responses: fight, flight, freeze, and the often-missed fawn
  • Identify the six core needs driving behaviour: escape, control, connection, predictability, movement, competence
  • Stay regulated yourself when they’re not, and know what to do when you’re losing it
  • Use the CALM framework to get the first 60 seconds right
